Momma Always Worried
My mom never wanted me involved with gang activity,
Because she didnât want me involved in it, I only wanted to do it more.
I was a rebel and I still am till this very day,
She worried about me every single day that I would make it home.
There were days I didnât come home and sheâd be worried sick,
Meanwhile, I was hustling making money and would crash on someoneâs couch.
My father figures were the older gang members in this crew,
They were people I know I can count on to put me in position to make good money.
It was about me looking fresh, dating cute girls in the neighborhood,
Along with representing my blocks and where Iâm from at all times.
Mom knew I had a cell phone and she was blowing it up at all hours of the night,
Iâd be dropping a text that Iâm fine and get back to keeping my head on the swivel.
Being a runner protector was good money for me and I led the way so much that,
More responsibilities were being given to me and Iâd get a few more dollars thrown my way.
For a few days, I was camped at my momâs house and sheâd take care of me,
Even though I was part of a dangerous gang, my squad knew to protect her.
Theyâd keep a lookout for her walking through the neighborhood while she was doing her errands,
Along with watching her go to work daily and making sure she wasnât in any danger.
I remember when I was camping out at her house for those few days,
She was trying to talk me out of leaving the gang life and doing right.
There was no way I could let what happened to me slide I remember telling her,
She knew that she couldnât say the cops would solve the case, we know that doesnât happen in Alphabet City often.
There was surely no talking me out of gang life,
Thereâs too much money to be made and I canât get that working some regular job.
Doing whatâs right was living the life on the blocks of Alphabet City,
Leaving wasnât really part of my plans (at least for now).
My mom would tell me sheâs worried that sheâll have to visit me at the morgue,
That she would have to identify me through the tattoos I have on my body.
She worries that Iâll end up in prison for the rest of my life,
She told me if thatâs to happen that she wonât ever come to visit me.
To not write her any letters, donât ask for money or things sent to me,
This would be her last rodeo of talking to me about this dangerous life that Iâm living.
She said that once Iâm healthy and feeling good, itâs time I leave for good,
To not come back whenever I wanted her home cooking or a safe place to hide for a few days.
She specifically told me that enough was enough and sheâs over it,
Itâs time for me to grow up and not look to her as a safety net anymore.
